Freelance Writer, 1988-present
Have written on general topics as well as on public health, science and the environment for Discover, The New York Times, Natural History, Scientific American, Wired, Audubon, The Village Voice and MUSE (the Smithsonian’s science magazine for children), among other publications. Two stories—"Wolves at the Door" from Discover and "The Killing Lakes" from Scientific American—were cited as notable articles in "The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2001."

Professor. Teach science writing, environmental reporting and advise on masterÕs projects. Designed and will teach the new M.A. science specialization core course in Fall 2005.

Received grant from the Hudson River Foundation to conduct an oral history of the commercial fisherman of the Hudson River and to document the decline of the shad and other fisheries. Archives are kept at the foundation and at the Hudson River Maritime Center in Kingston, N.Y
