Ph.D. Programs
Lamont-Doherty hosts 75 doctoral students from the graduate
program of Columbia's Department
of Earth and Environmental Sciences who perform groundbreaking
research in almost all areas of Earth and environmental sciences,
including aqueous geochemistry, atmospheric science, climate
studies, ecophysiology, geology, marine geology and geophysics,
paleoclimate, paleontology, physical oceanography, seismology
and solid earth geophysics, and solid earth geochemistry.
Students have offices on the campus of Lamont-Doherty, and
work in its laboratories. Graduate classes are offered both
on Columbia's main Morningside Heights campus and at Lamont-Doherty.
Mathematically oriented Earth science students may pursue
a Ph.D. through either Columbia's Department
of Earth and Environmental Sciences or Columbia's Department
of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics, which has
a joint program in mathematical geoscience with Lamont-Doherty.
In either case, students should also apply for an IGERT
Fellowship in Applied Mathematics and Earth & Environmental
Science.
