<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I am writing this in San Francisco at the end of another week-long Fall AGU meeting. It has been a very good week. Of course the Lamont Party on Tuesday night (that followed the west coast Board meeting of the Alumni Association) was the usual tremendous success. The Town meeting for the Langseth on Thursday night was surprisingly well attended - given the unavoidable number of conflicts with other meetings. I managed to get through my citation for Sean Solomon speech at the Medal ceremonies on Wednesday night without falling off the podium. (First time I had given a speech when there was one of those big jumbotron screens on the stage, projecting a much bigger than life size image of the speaker in real-time - it is off-putting to say the least to catch a glimmer in the corner of your eye, look aside and unexpectedly see a giant version of oneself standing there, bow-tie askew, hair dishelevelled etc etc). Anyway, it was a very enjoyable and happy event. Most importantly the week was dominated by many great talks and posters by Lamonters, too few of which I had the opportunity to attend.

So now I can look forward to digging my car out of the snow in economy parking lot at Newark Airport at 10pm tonight - still have not figured out what to use as a shovel yet. I hope the weather improves over the weekend because we have our annual reception for our campus neighbors on Sunday afternoon and Doug Brusa tells me we have a record response rate this year with over 85 folks attending.

Have a good weekend - I will be in the office all next week - lots of things to do and problems to solve before the Holidays.
