<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I shall be in San Francisco all next week, along with many of you I am sure, attending the American Geophysical Union Meeting. So a lot of
time this week has been spent on thinking about apparently wise things to say at various speeches and events. As always the number of
overlapping and simply coincident sessions and events make planning theweek a non-trivial task.

As in previous years I am confident that one of the high points of the week will be the Lamont reception - 6:30pm on Tuesday on the top floor
of the Crowne Plaza Hotel. See you there.

I will be going down to Stanford to meet with Oleg Jardetsky while I am out there, and have more than one meeting with key NSF folks to talk
about a myriad of troubling issues. And on Wednesday night I have the privilege of being the citationist for the Harry Hess medal that is
being awarded to my long time friend and colleague Sean Solomon. Of the many Town Meetings that are scheduled for Thursday evening I will
be at the one discussing plans for our new research vessel, Langseth, - 6pm Marriot Hotel Golden Gate A3.

Wishing every one large audiences, smooth-running powerpoints and good poster locations.

Have a great weekend - CNN says it will be 62 degrees in SF on Monday.

- Mike
