<> CURRENT B&G PROJECT

  • Roofing  Projects:
Core lab- roof  95 % complete.
    Geochemistry- 90 % complete.
    Oceanography- 75 % complete.

All roofs are completely watertight but need equipment reset on permanent mounting devices. Oceanography safety railing and some minor flashing details remain.

  • Administration 2nd floor:
    Room 202 renovation complete.

  • Greenhouse:
Old structure removed and remaining skeleton primed and painted.
New greenhouse components will be delivered in mid August. New concrete floor, all stone work repaired, and the interior walls have been stuccoed.

  • Oceanography Emergency Generator:
Money has been budgeted and an engineering firm contracted to provide plans and specifications
for the purchase and installation of an emergency generator for the oceanography  building. We are also awaiting word on an application submitted to NYSERDA that would provide us with two mini-turbine generators, subsidized by NY state, that would provide  the same function as a generator and at the same time offer reduced utility operating expenses. We will have a  decision from NYSERDA in two weeks and that will determine  how we proceed.

  • Miscellaneous:
    – Installed sheetrock ceiling 143 Monell.
    – Installed new, or replaced defunct a/c units 105 core lab, 206c core lab, borehole computer room, borehole 1st floor,  external relations 2nd fl. lamont hall,.
    – Relocated enlarger to room 105 seismology.
    – Installed shelving in rooms 8 and 15 biology.

<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Monday's historic visit by NSF program managers from all three of the Divisions that comprise the Geosciences Directorate at NSF was very successful. I have a feeling that they learned more than we did. It was an extremely useful day that has stimulated continuing discussions about how to develop the many excellent data base activities that are ongoing at the Observatory, at CIESIN and IRI.  We will be following up with this - most immediately next Thursday when I am at NSF for the day.

I caught the 7:30 am shuttle down to DC on Wednesday, and came back the same evening on the 9:00 pm. After seven separate meetings with staffers of NY Representatives and Senators, I attended the reception  for the State Department hosted G8 Earth Observation Summit, where the
heads of NOAA, NASA as well as Senator Stephens of Alaska spoke eloquently about the importance of earth and environmental monitoring systems.  Warmed the cockles of my heart, it did! Rita Colwell, the head of NSF, was in attendance too, as was President Hirano of JAMSTEC
(Japan has agreed to host next years summit on the same topic), with many of the same staffers that I worked with on IODP topics over the past eight years.

Anyway, the most interesting part was the day-long session with the various staffers talking about the importance of the NSF budget, emphasizing the strength of our partnerships with NOAA and the importance of maintaining their extra-mural programs, and finally the dreaded topic of the ambiguous language of the Marine Mammal Protection Act.  The House is in recess now, but the Senate is still in session -but the real action on the bills that are important to us will not come
till they go to conference in the fall.

It's pouring rain, so it must be the weekend.

Happy August!

– Mike
