<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I am back in town and suffering the consequences of a backlog of work - but I should be caught up by the beginning of next week.

Many congratulations are due to Robin Bell and her several co-PIs for the success of their NSF ADVANCE proposal - a more than $3M project submitted through the Earth Institute to initiate new programs that will bring (and retain) more women scientists into the field of earth sciences (broadly defined) at Columbia. This is an important success and I look forward to helping to insure over the next few years that this program has the intended significant impact on our community of research scientists.

The Jardetzky Lecture is the highlight of this afternoon - I enjoyed talking with Professor Alan Levander earlier today and look forward to seeing many of you at the reception in Monell following his talk.

And I am very pleased to announce that the winner of the image contest for the new LDEO website is the 'Antarctic Circle, midwinter dawn' image, by Dee Breger. Congratulations and the $100 prize will be on its way to Dee. Please continue to review the test site at http://satchmo.ldeo.columbia.edu and keep your comments coming - they have been very helpful.

The weekend promises to be beautiful - I will take a second car full of audiovisual and computer equipment to sustain my undergraduate daughter through the fall semester at Rutgers, and I will spend the rest of the time here catching up on innumerable pending tasks.

– Mike
