<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Monday was spent at an Earth Institute retreat downtown where discussions focused on turning the newly completed EI Strategic Plan into reality by determining a set of implementation steps. I am sure you will be hearing much more about this in the coming weeks.

At 3:00 pm on Tuesday afternoon NSF signed a contract worth more than $620M over ten years with Joint Oceanographic Institutions Inc. who will manage an alliance between Texas A&M University and Lamont-Doherty to carry out non-riser drilling and logging operations for the new integrated Ocean Drilling Program. For us this means that Dave Goldberg's Borehole research lab will have solid support for the next ten years, providing a stability to his operations that will be greatly welcomed after the past year or two of uncertainty. We won this contract because of the record of accomplishment that Dave and his staff established over the past decade. All the members of the Borehole Research Group deserve our hearty congratulations.

For more than two years, we have been in discussion with NOAA about the establishment of a NOAA Joint Institute, partnering the Observatory and Columbia with the NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) at Princeton. This week we heard that it was at last approved and the designated Director, Yochanan Kushnir will be working to get this new entity established and functioning over the next few months.

I met the new Provost Alan Brinkley for the first time on Tuesday, during a meeting discussing our plans for the future of our research vessel - this was a very constructive and successful meeting.

I am in San Francisco all next week running a workshop, with Dave Karl, to help NSF with their planning for the Ocean Observatory initiative.

And tomorrow try looking at our brand new web page, in between your tours of the exhibits at Open House -

Wishing for sunshine,
Have a great weekend,

– Mike
