Bev has been on vacation the past few days, and Kerstin is giving a paper at GSA in Seattle, so the office has been a little empty this week.

Two happy things and one that is sad, and then one that is just silly.

Many congratulations to Chris Small who has been elected to Columbia University Senate, filling one of the three vacant seats for Professional Officers of Research. This is a significant commitment, and we all thank Chris for taking this on and representing many of the staff on our Campus.

The Chili cook-off on Wednesday was spectacularly successful, with one John Diebold (of whom you may have heard) walking away with primary honors (and a handsome ladle). Jim Laatsch and Kevin Jones did the heavy lifting to get this organized - thank you Jim and Kevin.

I sent a formal message of best wishes to Charlie Kennel and John Orcutt at Scripps earlier this week - the California fires have forced them to shut down for several days and some of their staff have suffered significantly. At least one good colleague of ours lost his home - pretty devastating when you think of it happening to yourself. But I believe the situation is beginning to stabilize now.

And yes, I bought a new car - same kind, same color. But it has a heated steering wheel - how could I have lived without one? (Why? One may ask with considerable validity)
