<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Our first Public Lecture of the season last Sunday afternoon was a great success - speaker Bruce Shaw had a capacity crowd of over 210 attendees, so there were more than 20 folks watching on television monitors outside the auditorium. And we had to cut off the questioning otherwise we would have been there late into the evening. It was excellent to see such interest, and thanks are due to Bruce for giving such a superb talk.

We are about to have two very important, and very practical renovation efforts underway on campus. We are going to rescue the warehouse from its present non-functional state, by clearing out the items that are no longer of value and instituting proper and enforceable policies about what goes (and stays) in there in future. Paul Ljunggren is taking on the heroic effort of leading this very difficult task.

Secondly, driven by a number of factors, but most notably the needs of the expanding Borehole research group, we are undertaking the first stage of a significant reorganization of the Instrument Laboratory. Greg Myers is the hero in this case - he will be leading the implementation of a set of recommendations resulting from an advisory group of stakeholders led by Jeff Weissel.

I have been attending (unfortunately only) small pieces of the Comer Science Fellows Symposium on Abrupt Climate Change the last couple of days - held over in the IBM Conference Center. An absolutely tremendous event characterized by tough but collegial scientific debate of the highest caliber in the most excellent of surroundings among a magic mix of world-leading mentors and young enthusiastic researchers. If only all meetings could be like that.

The sun shines on the river as I type this. It's time to dig out the Beneteau catalog again.

Have a great weekend,

– Mike
