<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

We are almost overwhelmed with good news this week!

We have received an NSF award that totals in excess of $20M to support the purchase and outfitting of a powerfully capable research vessel that will replace Maurice Ewing. This was made possible by the hard work of all the staff in the Marine Department as well as many members of the engineering and research staff of the Observatory who helped with proposal preparation and advisory committee activities. This is not the largest award that we have received from NSF, but I think it is the largest award that we have received in support of a facility. Congratulations to everyone involved!

We expect the new vessel will start operating late in 2005. We are in the process of placing new information on the Marine Department web page that will provide all the basic specifications and capabilities – suffice it to say that it will revolutionize academic marine geophysics!

Now we must decide how to name her! Should we retain the same name? With this announcement, I solicit nominations from everyone – please send your ideas to Jackie Graney in the Marine Office (jackie@ldeo.columbia.edu). In a few weeks we will review and report on the ideas that we have received.

A second piece of great news is that fact that Kevin Griffin has been awarded tenure within DEES – congratulations Kevin!

And thirdly, Maya Tolstoy has been promoted to Doherty Research Scientist and so joins the Senior Staff of the Observatory. Congratulations Maya!

Under the auspices of the IUGG Committee on Mathematical Geophysics, the redoubtable Marc Spiegelman organized a clearly successful three-day-long meeting on Frontiers in Theoretical Earth Sciences down on the Morningside Campus this past week. The poster session, which I attended and enjoyed, was advertised not just as a ‘Poster Session’ but as ‘Gala Poster Session’ – the distinction remains a little vague in my mind, but maybe it was related to the fact that Marc gave a speech!

We entertained key members of the Board of the Doherty Foundation today (Friday) – I hope many of you had the opportunity to meet with them at the reception this afternoon.

Have a great weekend,

– Mike
