<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
It is a quaint notion that "things slow down" in
the summer - if it is true then summer has not yet arrived.
It has been a normally busy week. We entertained CU Vice President
for Research David Hirsh on Monday, and met for the first
time his new deputy Deborah Stiles. On Tuesday I was in DC
for a Marine Mammal Commission meeting. Wednesday was press
day with interviews for a local magazine and for Voice of
America. The highlight of Thursday was the fact that I managed
to steal an hour away from my desk to listen to Bill Ryan's
lecture to the Summer interns, linking eastern Mediterranean
archeological findings to volcano-triggered climate change.
Just a wonderfully convincing story.
And today we had the privilege of entertaining CU Provost
Alan Brinkley who spent six hours with us, touring the campus,
meeting with groups of researchers and students and listening
(very politely) to all our concerns and aspirations. This
was a very useful and productive visit. And thank you to everyone
who participated and made it so successful.
Have a great weekend,
– Mike
