<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

The end of this painful week is welcomed. Thank you all who attended the Recognition Event for George Papa on Wednesday. It was a fine tribute to George, and his family greatly appreciated our kind thoughts.

Now we must move on and make the adjustments to our administration so that we can continue to function effectively in the short term. Vicky Nazario has been appointed as Acting Head of the Accounting Group, Pat Temple's Ancillary Services operation reports temporarily to Pam Stambaugh, and I will take on the supervisory role for the Administrative units overall. We engaged a search firm this afternoon to start the process of finding a permanent Assistant Director for Finance and Administration. This process, which will be careful and thorough, will take several months to complete, so we must continue to devise ways in the interim to handle our administrative affairs.

I leave for San Francisco on Monday morning and will return on Friday. It will be a busy week, and will doubtless see many of you out there - hopefully at our annual Alumni reception at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Tuesday at 6:30pm.

At last I can make the formal announcement of what I hope most of you know already - the name of our new research vessel will be Marcus G. Langseth. We plan extensive celebrations of this fact at the time of commissioning, following the refit, sometime in late 2005.

Lamont annual children's holiday party for our children and grandchildren ages 2-12 on Sunday, December 19th 3pm–5pm – Lamont Hall. Please bring a small gift for Santa to give to your child or grandchild, and an appetizer or dessert to share.

I hope it will be a quiet week back here at Lamont.
