<> CURRENT B&G PROJECTS

  • Oceanography Emergency Generator:
On Friday May 6th a scheduled electrical shutdown occurred which allowed us to do two things. 1- disconnect and abandon the underground primary feed and the transformers located in the rear of the building (site of the new generator enclosure) and 2- energize the new primary feed and transformer while concurrently replacing the main switchgear in the building and eliminating numerous add on disconnects by incorporating them in the new panels. The obsolete transformers have been removed and the area excavated for the new generator enclosure concrete pad.
  • Front Entrance / Left Hand Turn Lane:
The retaining wall on the west side of 9W opposite our entrance is complete. Curbs and blacktop base course have been installed. New plantings are also complete. The NJDOT contractor has been asked repeatedly for a schedule of completion. We have been assured the information will be provided sometime next week.

The new gate operating equipment is fully functional at this time. When you approach the "proximity readers" located on the poles please try to be sure that the face of the tag is approximately parallel with the face of the reader. If you have not mounted the MT tag to your car you must hold the tag by pressing either end of the tag at the screw hole between thumb and fingertips. The readers have a range of 9 to 11 feet from the face of the reader, however there is a second or two delay in the response of the gates because the controller has to verify the authorization of the tag and then signal the gates to open.
We have left the yellow light hooked up so that those who are having difficulty finding a good read location in their car can continue to test for the right spot.

If you are having specific problems please contact Ray Long, ext. 8822.
New LDEO signage will be installed next week.

  • Marine Biology, Lab 2:
The fume hood blower and controller have been installed. The new D.I. water system has been completed which will now service this lab and several others in this wing.
  • Marine Biology, Lab 7:
The make-up air system has been installed. Job complete.
  • Dr. Kelemen:
Rooms 32 and 51/52 - Casework installation is underway. Remaining casework will most likely be completed next week when the balance of the equipment arrives.
  • Room 208D Oceanography:
    Renovation complete.
  • Room 211 Administration:
    Renovation complete.
  • Miscellaneous:
    - Replaced condenser coils for growth chambers room 6 Marine Biology.
    - Rebuilt five catch basins.
    - Installed new air compressor in Marine Biology.
    - Replaced four window units Oceanography.

<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

It has been a very difficult and challenging week, so it is hard to sit down and write a cheerful and upbeat message - but nevertheless I will search assiduously for positive and happy thoughts.

First among those must be the arrival on Tuesday June 1st of our new Assistant Director for Facilities and Engineering - Pat O'Reilly. He joins us from Fordham University and his office is on the upper floor of the Admin Building. This is a new position - Pat will breaking new ground (so-to-speak) and will, over the next few weeks, be meeting with many of you as he explores the opportunities and challenges that this new job.

Again searching for positive tid bits: I hope our new electronically controlled security gate is working for you as well as it is working for me!

And lastly, really stretching, the great wisdom of the appropriators on the House Science, State Approps Subcomm caused them to vote for the full $57.92M for the new Ocean Drilling vessel in the NSF MREFC budget. Still a long way to go on that - but a good small first step.

So, have a great weekend. Bev is back from her spring cruise to the Baltic, so I will have to get back to work next week…

– Mike
