<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

It has been a week of events. Tuesday night was the New York Academy of Sciences where I introduced the ex-Liverpudlian Richard Seager to an excellent audience who he bedazzled with his stories of drought in the American west and their intimate dependence upon sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific.

Wednesday was a very emotional day. The special symposium to recognize the great Gerard Bond and his contributions to earth and climate sciences was outstanding. Thanks go to Wally and Sam
Gallagher and all the speakers. The science speakers made an exceptional effort and were very successful in paying tribute to Gerard. And the makeup of the audience was especially pleasing - a
large number of folks traveled here from outside Lamont as a tangible expression of their respect for Gerard and his work. Most importantly all of Gerard's immediate family were able to attend and the
sincerity and emotion of their remarks made most of the events of the rest of the week seem of little consequence. Of no surprise to anyone, was the strength and grace of Rusty - throughout what must
have been a tough day.

Thursday was the first day of the Comer Abrupt Climate Change Fellow program at the IBM Conference Center. Sadly Gary himself was unable to attend but the few talks that I was able to attend were convincing evidence that this is a substantive program that continues to have impact on the field.

And so it is Friday, and Tony Watts, who I first met on a research vessel in the Canadian Arctic in 1970, was in the cafeteria this lunch time. It goes to show, if you do not make it to the cafeteria
for lunch you miss out on so much.

Have a great weekend,

- Mike
