<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Reading sentences like "climate change is only scary to grownup
liberals" in the local newspaper, reminds me that the American west
(which is where I am right now - Salt Lake City) is quite a different
place!

The meeting of the ORION program, to plan the design and
implementation of the $300M NSF Ocean Observing system was extremely
successful, overall. Even with $300M folks realize that many of their
high priority goals will not be met - there is never enough money.
But the tough and honest debate about just what the highest priority
components are, is now maturing to a constructive level.

Today (Friday) I shift hats from ORION to IODP - for a day-long
members meeting, and then fly home tonight on a red eye.
