<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

This week started off with an exceptional public lecture Sunday by
Juerg Matter "Climate Change Problem: A Permanent Underground
Storage Solution?" This followed an equally excellent Earth's Core
talk by Dave Walker on March 26th. Attendance has been near-capacity
at both these events with thankfully few complaints about (and much
support for) the new $5 admission fee. The series continues April
30th with Lynn Sykes: "The 100th Anniversary of the San Francisco
Earthquake of 1906: What have we learned since then about the
earthquake process and prospects for earthquake prediction?" This
will unquestionably be a popular talk.

I had the pleasure of taking two of our ADVANCE Program Marie Tharp
fellows to lunch on Monday with Marie Tharp herself. Marie
continues in excellent health and she really enjoyed a long lunch
listening to stories from the modern generation of woman geoscientists.

Most of the week was consumed by 21 separate meetings and
appointments both here and downtown, but it ended with a great
afternoon hosting NSF Assistant Director for Geosciences, Margaret
Leinen, on her first visit to Lamont for substantially more than five
years. It was good to hear the (mostly good) news from NSF, and most
importantly, have an opportunity to showcase all the great science
that is going on here. Thank you to everyone who helped organize
such a good visit for Margaret.

Next week is chaos for me. I am supposed to be in Denver for a White
House sponsored meeting planning research priorities in Ocean
Sciences for the next decade. But I have been (or may be) called for
jury duty. There is no point in delaying it - whenever I get called
it will be a scheduling problem. So I shall be an optimist and pack
my suitcase on Monday morning and hope that I get rejected because of
my radical views on some aspect of the criminal justice system, and
hope that that rejection comes quickly enough so I can make an
evening flight out west..

I am confident that it will stop raining for the weekend (another
sign of optimism),

Have a good one,

- Mike
