 <>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I watched the Global Dimming Nova Program on Channel 21 on
                    Thursday
night - it was really well done. A good balance of flashy
                    graphics
to engage the general audience with careful and reasoned descriptions
of sometimes complex science. Most important of all, of course,
                    is
the fact that our own Beate Liepert was prominently featured
                    and was
acknowledged rightfully as one of the two folks in the world
                    who
first recognized the fundamental importance of this phenomenon.
                    It
is not a coincidence that 'global dimming' is the featured
                    story on
our web page right now - check it out - there are some good
                    simple
animations designed to explain the rudiments of this process
                    to the
lay audience. Thanks to Beate for bringing such prominent
 recognition to the Observatory.

Slowly, but surely I feel we are improving the quality of
                    the
materials on the front of our web page - which is thanks to
                    the hard
work of many folks. We need to do more of course - it is the
                    money-
thing that limits us. . .there is no lack of good topics and
                    ideas.

I was kept on the hook for jury duty all this week - so I
                    had to
cancel my Denver trip. And each day I did not know (until
                    after
5:30PM) whether I was going to be called the following day
                    - so it
made scheduling anything very difficult. But in the end, I
                    was never
assigned to a case, and my good citizenship is rewarded with
                    a
promise that I will not be called again for several years!

 Enjoy the weekend!

 - Mike
