<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

The highlight of the week was Monday and Tuesday, spent up in
Shelburne Nova Scotia at the shipyard where our new ship, Marcus G.
Langseth, is undergoing a major refit. She is out of the water (on a
railway, not in a dry dock), and had just had her complete hull sand
blasted. She looked magnificent. The huge pod that will hang
beneath the hull to carry the multi beam transducer array was being
welded on, and most of the major steel work - creating the huge open
deck space on the starboard side, and adding new laboratories and
state rooms - is completed. The small team of Lamonters, led by Al
Walsh, who are resident up there are working long days under very
tough conditions, but I think everyone is beginning to see just what
a wonderful and capable ship she will be. Despite everyone's best
efforts the project is several weeks behind schedule right now, so we
will not see her off in Manhattan until late September or early October.

One of the legendary members of the Lamont Staff - the head of our
machine shop - John Sindt has decided to retire after 42 years of
exemplary service. There will be a recognition event next Friday,
June 30th, over in Lamont Hall - time and details to be released
early next week. Please join us in recognizing the great
contributions that John has made to this institution over more than
four decades.

I think everyone recognizes that one of the jewels in Lamont's
Columbia crown is the Tree-Ring Laboratory - a research group that
has for many years led key and influential observational studies of
the history of recent climate. So I am very pleased to announce that
at the 7th International Tree-Ring Conference just held in Beijing
June 11-17 Gordon Jacoby received a Life Achievement Award, and Ed
Cook an Outstanding Service Award. Many congratulations Ed and
Gordon and thank you for the recognition that you continue to bring
to the Observatory.

Have a good weekend.

- Mike
