<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

A relatively quiet week - (must be the heat). Unquestionably the
highlight was the summer intern talks and posters on Tuesday.
Congratulations again to all the students for putting on such an
excellent show. (And as always, to Dallas Abbot for leading it).

There is now tangible physical expression of the construction of the
new Geochem building as work begins in earnest on the Parking Lot.
At 3:30PM next Tuesday in the Monell Auditorium we will have an Open
Meeting for Lamonters to provide and update on plans and handle any
questions that folks may have about this major year long construction
effort. Please come along if you are interested.

For the past couple of decades I have evolved the habit of
automatically recording the national news on the VCR so I can watch
it, (and fast forward through the trivia), when I get home in the
evening. My network of choice changes with the years - but I have
been with BBC for quite a while now. But just these past few weeks I
have stopped doing it - world news has reached such a level of
depressing insanity that an otherwise relaxing evening is overwhelmed
by anger and frustration. I know denial does not work, but sometimes
it makes you feel better. . . . . . . .I think I will get my news
exclusively from the Colbert Report in the future.

It should be a beautiful weekend - enjoy.

- Mike
