<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

As I spent an enjoyable lunch on Monday welcoming our latest Tharp
Fellow Mousumi Roy to our Campus, I was saddened to hear that Marie
Tharp herself remains in Nyack Hospital - we all wish her the very
best for a fast recovery.

Tuesday saw the first of a series of 'update' meetings in the Monell
Auditorium on progress with our new Geochemistry building, the
impacts of the construction of which are becoming clearly visible as
work on the new parking lot proceeds rapidly.

We will hold a ground breaking ceremony for the new building on
Wednesday September 27th, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. A tent will be set
up somewhere near the building site. Refreshments will be served and
remarks befitting the occasion will be offered. Many of those who
helped make this day possible are expected to attend, with shiny
ceremonial shovels at hand. Please make a note on your calendar and
help us properly observe this significant day in the history of our
campus.

This afternoon we ran the latest in our ongoing series of
'mentorship' panels over in Lamont Hall - this one was intended to
share wisdom and insights into academic appointment and promotion
procedures so that our students and junior staff can understand
better the processes and decision-making that control the progress of
their careers. The last in this summer's series is next week -
Friday 18th - and that will focus upon conveying an understanding of
the nature and extent of the formal responsibilities of Principal
Investigators on Federal grants. Beth Israel is going to help out
with this, and will convey, I predict, information that would be of
value to folks beyond just students and junior staff.
