<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR


For reasons beyond my comprehension I was off sick Monday and
Tuesday, so the last week of summer is a short one for me.

We entertained Paul Anderer, the newly appointed Columbia Vice
Provost for International Relations for a large part of the day on
Wednesday - a very interesting set of conversations - clearly we will
be working closely with him in the future and, equally clearly, there
are more opportunities for Lamont's globally distributed efforts to
build new synergies with other parts of the Columbia enterprise. And
Paul is dedicated to help us do this.

Also on Wednesday we welcomed our incoming students - my schedule got
compressed sufficiently that I missed the opportunity to issue my own
words of welcome at the afternoon orientation session - not a good
signal from the Lamont Director given the essentially important role
that the students play in the health of our campus - I will have to
correct this omission at a later meeting.

Thursday started with a special ExCom dedicated to some appointment
decisions, but by the middle of the afternoon the day was slowing
down as thoughts predominated of the forthcoming long weekend,
blessed by Ernesto's rainfall.

Mohamed ElBaradei, the director General of the International Atomic
Energy Authority, at a meeting in Vienna. Check out the person
sitting two seats to his left - is that, in all his sartorial
elegance, our own Paul Richards?
