<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR


In the very earliest days of Lamont, one of (founding Director)
Maurice Ewing's most important colleagues was Joe Worzel. He was
Doc's deputy and was key to enabling him achieve both his short term
goals and long term vision in the building of what was then Lamont
Geological Observatory. Joe has been a very important friend to
Lamont for five decades, Most recently as the Chair of the Board of
PGI Inc he engineered the endowment gift that has allowed the
creation of our Technology Center. Joe's daughter called me this
afternoon to tell me that Joe was recently released from the hospital
and is at her home in Toronto - but he is critically ill. On behalf
of us all I have sent a strong message of good wishes to Joe, and
hope sincerely that he is able to recover.

And so the new academic year begins. Too much sad news. The Marie
Tharp Memorial event is at 2pm Sunday September 17th at the Tappan
Reformed Church, 32 Old Tappan Road, Tappan, NY. When I get more
details about this I will pass them along.

It was good to see Robin Bell back in town today after her
successful, and completely trouble free, transatlantic sail in a 38
foot boat with her family from Nyack to Barcelona Spain.
Congratulations, Robin - a great achievement.

Arnold Gordon and I met with Michela Biassuti this afternoon to
congratulate her on her appointment to the permanent research staff
as a Doherty Associate Research Scientist - please congratulate
Michela when next you see her.

So yes, there is some happy news as well.
