<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

There will be a Celebration of Marie Tharp's Life Sunday Sept 17 at
2:00 pm at the Tappan Reformed Church, Tappan NY, followed by a
reception at Colonial Inn in Norwood NJ.

On behalf of the Observatory, I will have the honor of offering the
first remarks. Between now and then I will struggle to assemble
brief but revealing insights into the scientific accomplishments and
really remarkable career of our dear friend Marie. One thing that
will be easy to report is what a pleasant task it was as Lamont
Director to occasionally spend time with Marie - and her still very
sharp mind. The beautiful Tappan Reformed Church building is the one
church that Marie herself is known to have enjoyed visiting. The
celebration and reception are open to all. I look forward to seeing
many of Marie's friends and admirers there.

As many of you know we heard recently that Joe Worzel, another
legend of Lamont's early days is seriously ill. Our thoughts have
been with him and his family and many of us have reflected on his
substantial contributions to our science and on his pivotal role in
the Observatory's history. To recognize Joe as a driving force
behind Lamont Doherty's development, and honor him in perpetuity, we
are planning to name the main Seminar Room in Lamont Hall in his
honor. This room was the site of many of the research presentations
that changed the direction of earth sciences, as Lamont researchers
unraveled the secrets of plate tectonics and climate change. It
remains today the venue of choice for many of our most important
seminars and workshops. It is an important and very special place on
our campus and will for evermore be named after Joe, in recognition
of the unique role he played in the early days of our great institution.

I should talk of some less somber things before I sign off on this
rainy Friday.

Next week will feature two very celebratory events - IRI will be
ten years young on Wednesday - there are too many folks to name who
should feel justly proud of the great accomplishment in establishing
this new and unique entity. IRI remains 'ahead of its time' even ten
years after it was established. Congratulations, Steve, and all your
staff. I hope Connie Lautenbacher understands the magnitude and
significance of your great achievement.

And secondly - next Friday is this year's Jardetzky lecture - Barbara
Romanowicz - the great Berkeley seismologist will be the speaker.
3:30pm in the Monell auditorium, reception will follow the lecture.

Have a great weekend,

- Mike
