<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I spent Tuesday at NSF in the Ocean Sciences Division discussing
plans for completion of our research vessel - overall, this was
successful, I believe - still many problems to solve and tough issues
to resolve. But now we have a framework for moving forward that NSF
approves in principle, so we are working hard to make progress.

Also ship-related, I am pleased to report that John Diebold, Chief
Scientist in our Office of Marine Operations has been elected to the
UNOLS Council - congratulations, John.

Arnold Gordon and his Steering Committee have been making
significant progress in establishing the Paros-PGI Observatory
Technical & Innovation Center [OTIC], and will be entertaining one of
their primary benefactors, Jerome Paros, when he visits next Tuesday.

We said farewell to Lisa Fish earlier this afternoon, our dedicated
Librarian for many years - leaving for the sun and beaches and
superior TGIF locale at the Rosentiel School in Miami. Best wishes
from us all Lisa.

As I write this, I have just finished listening to Harriet
Zuckerman's talk on gender in science - the latest in our continuing
series on the Science of Diversity. It was a great talk, and it was
interesting for many reasons but also because it was a report of a
study that had been completed (with CU's Jonathon Cole) quite some
years ago, and since that time Harriet reported there had been only
one other authoritative study. Very curious to me that an issue of
such significance has received such little attention in the social
sciences.

Anyway, the sun is shining, the sky is blue and its Friday, the 13th,
so step warily.

Have a great weekend,

- Mike
