<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I tried to get to Roger Buck's talk at the Explorer's Club on Monday
night, but did not make it and had to be satisfied with listening to
his interview on the Leonard Lopate show on NPR, talking about his
exciting Ethiopian adventures. Tuesday brought another session of
contract negotiations up in Boston with the shipyard - we will be
sharing the results of that with NSF in Washington this coming
Tuesday. I am REALLY looking forward to that...

The external review of our NOAA cooperative institute CICAR on
Wednesday and Thursday went very well thanks to Yochanan Kushnir's
careful preparation and the excellent presentations by our climate
researchers. I think Karl Turekian and his review committee will
produce a highly complementary report.

Friday was so full of activity I did not even have time to complete
the weekly report. ExCom took up most of the morning. Earth
institute Executive Director Steve Cohen was our guest at this
meeting. But the most important action was the approval by ExCom of
the selection of Suzanne Carbotte as our first Bruce C. Heezen Senior
Research Scientist. Congratulations Suzanne!! We will be placing a
more substantial announcement of this important appointment on our
web page in the coming days.

Our Advisory Board met on Friday afternoon, and in the evening we had
our annual dinner for members of FOLD (Friends of Lamont Doherty) and
the Torrey Cliff Society. Bill Ryan was our dinner speaker and as
always he left the audience aghast at the spectacular presentations
and animations of seafloor topography and other geophysical data sets
- thank you again Bill for a very impressive show. GeoMapApp won a
whole new following!

And of course today, Saturday, was a spectacular Open House. Thank
you to everyone for the fabulous effort - every year it gets better -
and we had an excellent crowd on a beautiful sunny afternoon. The
official head count was 3953.

Have a great week,

- Mike
