<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

An NSF site review of the ADVANCE program on Tuesday and Wednesday
(very successful), a day long EI retreat at Black Rock Forest on
Thursday (moments of great interest discussing the attributes of
Sustainable Development as a true academic discipline), and a visit
to the Campus by Provost Brinkley on Friday - all caused the week to
pass by hurriedly.

The Provost's visit was dedicated singularly to discussions of the
possibility of creating new Research professor positions for the
Doherty staff at Lamont.

I owe many folks an apology - I know many would have liked to meet
with Alan while he was here. But we believed that the research
professor topic was of such fundamental importance that we wanted to
keep all discussions focused upon this one central issue. We have
much support from Alan - and we have a developing strategy for how to
move forward. I was very encouraged.

But now I need to spend the weekend catching up on all the tasks
that got neglected during such a hectic week.
