I think there should be a limit on the number of meetings each week
that I have to attend at the Low library, and certainly this week
exceeded the acceptable threshold.

But that aside, given the large number of folks away on vacation the
traffic level in terms of phone calls and emails has moderated, and
provided the time to look at and approve the many proposals that have
been going into the August 15th NSF target date.

The penultimate event in our Research Life Panel series was this
afternoon - talking about promotions and career advancement in the
academic world - again thank you to the panelists for giving up their
summer Friday afternoon - Roger Buck, Kim Kastens and Mingfang Ting -
to provide wisdom and guidance to our junior colleagues.

As part of this same series next Friday we will be talking about the
knotty problem of authorship - how are decisions made (or how SHOULD
they be made) concerning the order (or presence) of authors on a
multi-author manuscript - that is 3:30pm Friday August 24th in the
Seminar room at Lamont Hall as usual.

The beautiful bronze plaque commemorating Marcus G. Langseth is in my
conference room right now - we will be shipping it down for permanent
installation on the ship in a few days. It will be on display
(temporarily) in the Cafeteria starting Monday. Just do not try to
pick it up - weighs a lot! Lillian Langseth (Mark's widow) came by
this afternoon to have a look herself, and give us her approval.
