<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I started the week by chairing a PhD thesis defense - something I
have not done in more than a decade! Congratulations to Janet Baran
who did an exemplary job presenting and explaining her research on
problems that I spent a large part of my own research career trying
to solve.

We are in the final stages of planning a major event on Monday
October 15th to honor the scientific contributions of Marie Tharp
and to spotlight the contributions of leading women scientists in
our field. We have a remarkable group of speakers committed to
participate in the event that will run from 11am til 5pm - the
notable Environmental Microbiologist Rita Colwell (ex Director
NSF; holder of the National Medal of Science) will present the
keynote address. A full agenda will be available in a few weeks.

There was a great talk this afternoon - a special seminar in our
"Research Life" program - by Teachers College Professor of
Psychology and Education Derald Wing Sue. And a week from now
Friday August 17th, 330pm in Lamont Hall is our next Panel meeting
in this same program, this time focused upon the topic "Promotions
and Career Development".

Given John Marra's departure from Lamont September 1st I am engaged
in many discussions to identify his successor as Associate Director
of the Biology and Paleoenvironment Division. I do not have much
time - but I am optimistic that I will be able to make a decision
before the end of the month.

Thank you to the many Lamonters who helped us, for a large part of
Thursday, entertain the staff from Mayor Bloomberg's sustainability
office. I hope that this introductory meeting - which was focused
upon us telling them what we do - will lead to closer interactions
on topics of common interest in the future.

Have a good weekend - there is not much of the summer left already...

Mike
