<>LETTER FROM
THE DIRECTOR
It was good to hear our own Bill Ryan getting a substantial
amount of
air-time on the Leonard Lopate show on NPR earlier this afternoon
-
and thank you to Leonard for repeating Lamont's name so many
times!
Paul Falkowski from Rutgers was Bill's partner answering all
the
world's questions about the oceans, and Paul was gracious
enough to
include praise of Doug Martinson's work on sea ice in the
Arctic. So
it was a superb piece of good visibility for us.
Stunning news came out of NSF last night. - we get over half
of all
our federal funding from the Geosciences Directorate at NSF.
The
newly appointed head of that Directorate (so new he had not
actually
moved to DC yet) - Mark Abbott - is not in fact going to take
the
position after all.. The reason given was conflict-of-interest
concerns, given his desire to maintain a relationship with
his
present employer, Oregon State University. This was an astounding
turn of events - and leaves our primary source of funding
without
permanent leadership for another period of unknown duration.
Keep cool over the weekend,
Mike
