<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

We are persistent, if nothing else, and plan to reschedule the
Recyclemania Trophy ceremony for next Friday, October 12th. But we
will confirm, with some trepidation, closer to the time...
Filming for the Observatory's promotional movie is well underway -
several folks have been subjected to the bright lights and makeup
this week, and we still plan to be able to preview this exciting
program at the Comer Building ribbon-cutting on November 30th.

This weekend, of course, is our annual Open House, (in case you had
not noticed!) - while I will be hosting several official visitors and
have a number of meetings scheduled, I also am determined to get out
and see as much as I can of the exhibits.

Somewhat lost in the Open House excitement is the fact that the night
before we hold a 'thank you' dinner for some important people, Alumni
Association and Advisory Board members and members of the Friends of
Lamont-Doherty (FOLD) and Torrey Cliff Societies. After Heidi
Cullen's colloquium you may have noticed Monell Lower Lobby being
prepared for this dinner (and thanks to TG and DEES for accommodating
our need for the space).

Saturday at Open House, as part of an alumni meeting starting at
1:00, we will have a ceremony to name the seminar room in Lamont Hall
the "J. Lamar Worzel Seminar Room". Too few current-day Lamonters
know the great importance of "Joe" Worzel to the establishment and
success of this place. He was one of Doc Ewing's earliest and most
important collaborators both in science and administration. In 1964
he received the United States Navy Meritorious Service Award for help
in locating the USS Thresher, a nuclear submarine lost in the western
Atlantic.

Attendance at the dedication is not restricted to alumni -- staff with
an interest who can break away from Open House at about 1:30 are
welcome to join us. Denny Hayes will give remarks about Joe Worzel,
who will attend along with members of his family.

Thanks in advance to all Open House volunteers.

- Mike
