Students will develop summer long research projects and will work in the field and lab alongside scientists and science practitioners to have an authentic and meaningful research experience. In order to maximize the growth and support of the students and to provide the broad support needed,  a distributed mentoring program with peer, near peer mentors, and professional mentors is critical. At the basic level students will work in teams to support each other in their shared experience, mentoring each other as they grow and develop. In the second tier, college students, often prior program participants, will be trained and supported as team leaders and mentors for the high school students. Above this the scientists will guide the teams in their research work.
