Ocean transport time-scales

Introduction

The animations below show the penetration of a dye tracer in the ocean. The surface boundary condition for the tracer is a unit step function in time. In steady state, the dye concentration everywhere will be "1". As the  simulations show, it takes several hundred to many thousands of years to reach equilibrium. Simulations were performed with the transport matrix method using monthly mean transport matrices derived from the data-assimilated ECCO (iteration 277) model.
