<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I have been in San Francisco at meetings all week - flew out on Sunday, returning on Saturday.

Open House was again a great success last weekend, despite the dull weather. Over 3000 folks attended, and great thanks are due the more than 300 volunteers who made it all work. Special thanks go to the Open House committee for organizing the event, and to those who volunteered to sign "autographs" for middle school students so that they could get credit for visiting each tent. Graduate students also made tremendous contributions by leading tours of the campus and staffing tents and exhibits. Efforts to attract students - both high school and undergraduates - were also notably successful, as were our alumni meeting and reception in Lamont Hall.

I spent Monday meeting with the Steering Committee for the NSF Ocean Observations Initiative (OOI), and then the rest of the week running a workshop planning the Regional-Scale Cabled Observatory component of the OOI that is slated to get more than $100M from the planned NSF-MRE initiative in 2006 and beyond. So it has been a full week of sitting 10 hours per day in windowless meeting rooms arguing about priorities, and implementation strategies, and science justifications and budgets - all the grist of the science planning mill. And now, what is worse, we have to generate a compelling Workshop report before the major ORION meeting (that will plan the overall OOI program) in January. Despite the culinary delights of the restaurants of Fisherman's Wharf, it will be nice to get home tomorrow.

Have a great weekend,

– Mike
