<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

One last reminder about the State of the Planet conference this coming Monday and Tuesday - though it may be too late to register (see EI web site) because the interest has been so great (more than a thousand registered already, I believe).

I spent half the day yesterday with our NOAA Joint Institute Director Yochanan Kushnir at GFDL, Princeton, meeting with the Director there Ants Leetmaa, talking about plans for the development and growth of the Joint Institute. This is clearly a very positive development in our relationship with NOAA - and we need some positives to offset the otherwise very bleak picture within NOAA's budget for external research support.

Saturday morning I leave for Japan - I must be in Sapporo on Monday for the inaugural meeting of the Board of a new international Corporation - IODP Management International - the outfit that manages the new International Ocean Drilling Program and which last week signed an historic $450 million contract with NSF and the Japanese agency MEXT. I am back home Tuesday night.

Next Friday - April 2, 2 pm, Monell Auditorium we will give a presentation on the status of plans for the refit of EWING (which has evolved into the acquisition of a used commercial seismic vessel named Western Legend - see the cafeteria walls for some line drawings). Our NSF proposal is still pending, but it is important to update everyone on where we stand with our planning. We will of course be finished before the Colloquium, - please attend and participate in the discussion. All are welcome.

Spring has arrived, clearly, so enjoy the weekend while I fly across the Pacific (and back).

Have a great weekend.

– Mike
