<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I strongly suggest to everyone that they spend some time in San Juan airport in Puerto Rico. It will change your perspective on your future travels. It will give your morale a tremendous boost. It will make you believe that JFK, La Guardia and Newark are smooth running models of elegant efficiency. Needless to say I spent a few hours there this past week, traveling to and from an excellent NSF workshop discussing the design of a major new national research program built around sustained ocean observations. San Juan's logistical dysfunctionality contrasted sharply with the extremely positive and effective workshop attended by more than 300 hundred extremely diverse oceanographers, including more than forty full time education professionals.

The first week of the New Year - always an exciting time of renewal and anticipation. I hope everyone's Holidays were great and that all your Holiday travel was safe and trouble free. It has been a short week for me - I returned home from the sunny Caribbean last night suffering a 60-degree temperature differential between airplane entry and exit ...so I have little news to report. Again I wish everyone well for the New Year.

One small piece of business follows:

If any one is planning to submit a proposal to the NSF program "Information Technology Research for National Priorities (ITR)"(http://www.nsf.gov/home/crssprgm/itr/) (the deadline for letters of intent is next Wednesday) please attend a short meeting in the Director's conference Room at 11:00 am on Monday January 12th so we can be sure to coordinate our submissions.

Have a great weekend,

– Mike
