<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

The Hudson River is magnificent this afternoon: a clear blue sky over vast areas of ice being pushed downriver by a bracing northerly wind. A beautiful sight made enjoyable only by the presence of well-sealed thermopane glass between me and it!!

It has been a conventional week - no travel, thank goodness, and no epic adventures (besides driving on the Palisades Parkway at 7:00 am on Thursday morning in the snow.) Twenty six separate appointments in my diary for the week, so I must have been doing something! Issues included Campus planning, a meeting with Beth Israel, the final meeting of Chris Small's ad hoc committee (that has so successfully led the reconstruction of our web site), planning for the future of the ODP Data Bank, completing the responses to the NSF Panel comments on our proposal for a vessel to replace the EWING, continuing with the Planning for the Columbia 250th Anniversary 'Taming the Climate' symposium, not to mention the always exciting Observatory Management group (OMG). Unquestionably the highlight was a workshop on Thursday afternoon that discussed the outcomes of the various LDEO Investment fund projects - we plan to write this up, in some abbreviated form and put something out on the web in the near future, so everyone can see the substantial and very positive impacts that many of these projects have had on our activities.

It is a three-day weekend coming up - enjoy and stay warm,
