<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

This has been a short week - out of town on Monday and down at NSF all day on Wednesday (talking about ship stuff mostly) - so five days of work had to be compressed into three, resulting in a particularly hectic schedule.

Folks at NSF were trying to assess the impact of the arrival of the new interim Director - Arden L. Bement, Jr., He joined NSF this week, coming from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, where he has been Director since Dec. 7, 2001.

Another important change in staffing there is Jim Yoder who will be leaving his position as Director of the Division of Ocean Sciences in September to return to URI.

We held the inaugural meetings of both the new Observatory Web Advisory Committee on Tuesday, led by Suzanne Carbotte, and the Heezen Research Scientist Search Committee earlier today (Friday) led by Bill Ryan and Paul Richards. And the week was topped off by another exciting two and a half-hour long marathon of an ExCom meeting.

But most significant of all was the celebration for Ellen and Wayne Went on Tuesday afternoon - wishing them well for their departure to the blue skies and sun of Arizona after decades of loyal and highly valued service to the Observatory. The warmth and emotion at this sometimes sad event were magic. Even Dick Greco's bad jokes could not take away from the genuine feelings of sadness felt by everyone at losing these good friends after so long.

I am ready for the weekend (again).
