 <> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
 The "Oscars" got more press
perhaps, but it was certainly NOT the most important award
ceremony last Sunday night. For on that night, Nick Christie-Blick
represented Lamont at the Pearl River Hilton when the Historical
Society of Rockland County honored the "History of Science
and Technology in Rockland County." Other honorees were
Wyeth (the pharmaceutical company previously known as Lederle
Labs), and two small research and technology companies. The
award itself turns out to be not just one, but also several
from various elected officials in the town and county. It
is nice to know that -- judging by the awards and remarks
they made at the event -- many local government officials
seem to be well aware of -- and respectful of -- the work
we do here. I came down to DC on Wednesday afternoon
for an event in the evening at the Library of Congress celebrating
the 10th birthday of CORE. Admiral James Watkins was the star
of the show naturally - but the supporting cast of Conrad
Lautenbacher and Bob Gagosian kept everyone well entertained.
Thursday was spent at a meeting of the CORE Board of Governors,
and Friday similarly for JOI. A lot of activity with these
two important Corporations, but the positive aspects of the
considerable growth in Ocean Observation and Ocean Drilling
Program activities are tempered by very depressing prospects
with the Navy and NOAA funding for basic ocean research. It
really seems that the US Navy is almost completely out of
the business of basic research nowadays - not a good thing
for national security of any kind. I will be coming home on the 5 PM shuttle
tonight, so I will get to admire the view from the GW Bridge
for longer than I would like ... again. Have a great weekend. – Mike____________________________________
