Biosphere evolution and ecology, especially mass extinction analysis, the integration of life and physical sciences (e.g., climatology, carbon cycling, and ecosystem thermodynamics), classical natural history (i.e., fossil identification and systematics), and the global and local effects of symbiosis (including the development of a "medical symbiotics" that rethinks pathogenicity on an evolutionary model of disease).
