<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

We announced the winners of the Vetlesen award this week - Professor Sir Nicholas Shackleton (Cambridge) and Richard Peltier (University of Toronto) will share the $200,000 prize in recognition of their profound contributions to climate science. The dinner and award ceremony will be this fall - we are still trying to finalize the date and will let everyone know as soon as possible. More details are on our web page.

July 1st marks the changing of the guard with the Chairmanship of Department of Earth and Environmental sciences. Bill Menke's great contributions over the past two years are appreciated by us all and we welcome Nick Christie-Blick into his dual roles as Department Chair and Deputy Director for Education for the Observatory. Mark Cane will be supporting Nick as the new Associate Chair.

Thanks to all who helped organize the SummerFest on Thursday - especially Felicia Taylor - it was a great event enjoyed by all. We do not often enough take advantage of our extraordinarily beautiful campus that enables us to run such events so successfully.

We are all sad to see Martin Visbeck leave the Observatory but we congratulate him, and wish him every success, with his new and highly prestigious position in Kiel. There will be a reception in his honor next Thursday - July 8th 3:30pm, Monell Lower Lobby - all are welcome.

The WHOI coastal research vessel Tioga is operating on the Hudson River this afternoon with Wade McGillis and Rocky Geyer onboard. A group of us are hoping to board her later this afternoon (in the non-piratical sense of the word naturally) and will report on what we find next week.

Have a happy and safe holiday weekend.

– Mike
