Research led by Richard Seager describes a modeling and paleoclimate perspective on the causes of North American droughts.

Over the last few years the Climate Modeling and Diagnostic Group within the Ocean and Climate Physics Division has conducted an intensive research program on the causes of hydroclimate variability and change over southwestern North America with a particular focus on persistent, multiyear, droughts.
