Lamont Weekly Report, May 4, 2012

There's more good news on the awards front this week. Pedro Sanchez was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Kaori Tsukui received an Outstanding Student Paper Award for her presentation at the 2011 AGU Fall Meeting. This is Kaori's second award! Also receiving an Outstanding Student Paper Award was Tiffany Rivera, who works with our
Geoinformatics for Geochemistry group.

It's a fact of life these days that we are subject to more government oversight. Kathy Callahan and Edie Miller have broad responsibilities for ensuring our compliance so that as little as possible intrudes on our day-to-day science. Inevitably, we will have to ask our PIs to address some concerns. For example, I have asked Edie to be our point of contact for the management of equipment that might be subject to export control.  She should be brought in as early as possible if there are questions about particular pieces of equipment or other clearance issues. Edie is working with Sponsored Projects on Morningside to develop and distribute FAQs on the definition of overlapping grants. Kathy Callahan is working with central administration on the implementation of recommendations resulting from the NSF review of our Marine Operations. The list goes on. As much as anyone, I'd like to return to the halcyon days of free-range science. But we will do our best to ensure that information is available, distributed and pertinent to the kind of work we do at Lamont. If it's any consolation, our
reputation in these matters is good and getting better.

Have a great weekend.
