silverside 2017 is the fifteenth annual 'Day in the Life of the Hudson River'! In that time we have worked with over 44,000 students, teachers and environmental educators. The various groups have studied the river at more than 100 riverfront sites, measuring salinity, chemistry, turbidity and biology. They have caught over 29,400 fish from 78 different species, representing almost one third of the 227 species documented in the Hudson River watershed through time! What a whirlwind of learning! The photo to the left captured by ichthyology Peter Park of an Atlantic Silverside consuming a Bay Anchovy, is a first for our event! (photo bottom right byMichelle Mustari)

October 12th started overcast and slightly wet in the southern end of the estuary, with New York City students and adjacent areas bundling up against the morning's damp weather. The dampness was accompanied by strong gusts of wind that hinted at what has been the busiest hurricane season in 124 years. Although the Hudson Valley is no longer categorized as being in the dry and even drought like conditions of 2016 and 2015, a wet spring and summer transitioned to 45 days of very dry weather and only half the normal rainfall. The salt has been pushing upriver, and today our sampling calculated the saltfront, @100 ppm chloride, as in Wappinger Falls ~ RM 65, further south than 2016's location by ~18 miles. With the salt come fish like Atlantic Silverside, Bay Anchovy and even Blue fish. Check out the student results!
